For my senior project at #YellowSpringsHighSchool, I threw an all-day music festival with about 10 local bands. I booked the acts, made and distributed the flyers, hired the equipment and somehow ran a slick show. This picture is of a dreadlocked 17 year-old me singing covers of ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Big City’ by #OperationIvy - with local band The Daveyhaters - and was the first time I ever sang with a band in public. The festival, which took place at Yellow Springs Amphitheatre, had a great turn out and we broke even. No small feat for a small-town slacker. Looking back nearly two decades later, this moment will always be up there as one of my crown achievements as I felt way out of my league on many counts and did it anyway. Ambition and fear are like two sides of the same coin. Only when you flip it, spinning up like a sphere, do they act as one. This was one of those moments. As with many things at this pivotal time in my life, nothing would have been possible without the unconditional - albeit often bewildered - support of my parents. They saw me through the worst of times and never gave up on me. They didn’t know what I was going to do with my life, neither did I, but they gave me the freedom to experiment, to fuck up, to scream, to flip the coin. #punkrocksavedourlives #yellowsprings #throwbackthursday
