3 million light-years from Earth, and half the size of our galaxy, this enormous star-forming nebula is one of the Triangulum galaxy’s spiral arms containing more than 200 young stars.

Under exceptionally clear and dark skies, the Triangulum galaxy is one of the most distant objects that a keen-eyed observer can view with the unaided eye.

It is seen here by the @NASAHubble telescope in a composite image from 1994, 1995, and 2001 observations. A different Hubble, astronomer Edwin Hubble, previously studied the Triangulum galaxy, which helped him to estimate the object’s distance and prove that it rests within a separate galaxy outside our own.
