To celebrate the release of his album Musicology and the launch of a tour by the same name, Prince performed an intimate show at Webster Hall in New York City on April 20, 2004.
Widely regarded by the larger music industry as his "comeback" album, Musicology found Prince back in the mainstream spotlight for the first time since the 1990s. His mostly acoustic performance at Webster Hall was filmed live for the MTV special THE ART OF MUSICOLOGY, and it provided attendees and viewers around the world with the opportunity to experience his best-known songs in a revelatory new way.
After opening the show by performing a pair of songs from Musicology with his full band, Prince perched on a stool at center stage and played the rest of the show solo while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. It was the first time in his career that he performed a solo acoustic set, and though it would soon become a core part of his stage presentation on the Musicology Tour, the novelty of the experience on this night was exhilarating. Years later, looking back on footage from that historic performance, you can still feel the electricity in the crowd as they participate in a playful call and response with Prince.
