"Angela Davis: An Autobiography" by Angela Davis # So much respect and appreciation of Angela Davis, who has become a shero for me in the past few years.  The amount of repression that she and other Black Power revolutionaries faced to advance justice is just a blip in most history books, if it is mentioned at all.  Her story is incredible and her resilience is inspiring.  This book offers a first-hand account of the U.S. governments tactics of repression that ranged from incarceration and assassination of activists that fought for justice. The power of activists like Angela Davis and mass grassroots movements posed such a great threat to the white supremacist and capitalist bedrock of this country, that she ended up on the FBI's most-wanted list. # Davis spent 16 months incarcerated (mostly in solitary confinement) and faced the possibility of the death penalty.  Learning the history of our country from those who have pushed forward change highlights the importance of strength in numbers and current activism such as the mobilization around Dr. Melina Abdullah, ( @docmellymel ) lead organizer of Black Lives Matter LA ( @blmlosangeles ), in response to 8 bogus charges intended to silence her and the movement.  With the dedication of her attorneys and the power of people in numbers, these charges were dropped.  But if we don't understand history, we cannot understand the present, or what needs to happen to get to the future that we all desperately need. # "The real strength of my approach at that time resides, I think, in its honest emphasis on grassroots contributions and achievements, so as to demystify the usual notion that history is the product of unique individuals possessing inherent qualities of greatness...while one of the protagonists in this battle was indeed the state, the other was not a single individual, but rather the collective power of the thousands and thousands of people opposed to racism and political repression." - #AngelaDavis # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #McGReads
