So I didn’t like swimming in cold water and I still don’t, but after today I at least understand the point of doing it. I’ll try to explain... - - In the Lake District in winter these tarns can be as cold as 1degree c. Today’s Tarn was around 5. As soon as you put your toes in, you start to resist the experience; everything in your body and mind is saying ‘no you idiot, go back’. Because actually the sensation in the body isn’t ‘cold’ it’s ‘pain’: the water actually really hurts, like needles. It’s so difficult to ignore that and gravitate towards the unpleasantness. I kept walking and the moment I got my shoulders in, it felt impossible to not go into panic/fight mode. Which basically looks like hyperventilating and trying not to squeal. - - On my second time in, I made a promise to myself to get past that point. I had all Gilly’s wisdom at hand and I know enough about mental training to know that if you’re constantly fighting the sensation and not actually feeling it, you’ll just hate it until the moment you get out. But if you can somehow clock that the pain is there and it’s OK and it won’t kill you then it becomes just that: OK. It’s still not that nice but it’s bearable. It’s this mental act of letting the experience be as it is and not resisting it, that makes cold water swimming effective mental training. They say it’s also good for your physical health! Maybe I’m a reluctant convert?! ⛪ 🏊‍♀️ - - Thanks @gillymcarthur for sharing with me all her wild swimming wisdom. 🙏 #weeingischeating
