Of all the moments where I have questioned if what I’m looking at through the viewfinder is real, this was the one that really sticks with me. The 2nd photo was used for the cover of @surfer_magazine photo annual, maybe my favorite cover ever because at the time arctic surf exploration was still seen as a bit of a hoax. I was in Ireland watching a storm form in the Atlantic, and realized that with it came perfect winds. We hopped on a last minute flight and crossed our fingers. The winds were easily 60 mph out of the north (with gust up to 90) kicking black sand up into the air. Like total rookies-our car door bent backwards. The black sand swirled with the wildest sunset I have ever set my eyes upon. This empty wave was shot just after we got out of the water.. energy was still high-as wave after wave peeled on a perfect sandbar. The next morning it was gone.
