Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio | Established in 1606, the Vank Cathedral in the New Julfa quarter of Isfahan, Iran, is dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of Armenian deportees that were resettled by Shah Abbas I during the Ottoman War of 1603-1618. More correctly known as the Holy Savior Cathedral (Armenian: Սուրբ Ամենափրկիչ Վանք; Persian: کلیسای آمناپرکیچ‎), corridors of successive arches lead into a fabulous interior blending both Armenian Christian iconography and Islamic geometric designs. The cathedral consists of a domed sanctuary, much like an Iranian mosque, but with the significant addition of a semi-octagonal apse and elevated chancel more usually seen in western churches. The adjacent library contains over 700 handwritten books, including the first book printed in Iran. Here in the courtyard can be seen a large freestanding belfry, towering over both Orthodox and Protestant Christian graves.
