The Hope Shelter dogs, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil • The Hope Shelter’s objective is to build and maintain a shelter for animals which will be taken care of by homeless people – providing them with decent, stable work. • “When you’re homeless, people ignore you. The animals give these people extreme amounts of attention and support they can’t get from society, and as a result, the animals become indispensable. A homeless person divides their food in half and gives it to their pet. I’ve seen it a million times. We decided to create a whole shelter behind this idea. To have that degree of empathy – to pick up a dog on the street blows me away. Homeless people find dogs and carry them to where they’re squatting. People with way more means leave them. We want to educate the public that adopting a dog is something immensely gratifying and improving for your life in many ways.
