Today I’m so excited to be joining @Aerie in celebrating women and supporting women for International Women’s Day!! My Role Model is @オプラ・ウィンフリー. Like so many women of my generation, I watched Oprah every day when I was growing up, she was the arbiter of so many things for me; she was a comforting constant throughout my painful adolescent and teen years. She was always there for me in the afternoon, sharing someone else’s story or teaching me something I would remember my entire life (never go to the secondary location!) or telling me which book I should probably read or instilling in me the immeasurable value of deep female friendship and support.
I was almost done with my book and was panicked about releasing my story into the world when Oprah gave her Globes speech in which she said “Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.” And I thought, “Well, yes. I CAN do this. I can speak my truth. Oprah would want me to, it’s my most powerful tool." And so I did.
And now this late night talk show. Which also, Oprah is a part of. Because of Oprah, I didn’t push the little voice down that was telling me to make a pivot in career, and take this risk and ask for something I had no right to ask for. I knew I had every right to ask for this because of her, a woman who I saw overcame every obstacle and trauma to blaze unthinkable trails. I knew I had to follow that little voice because I had watched again and again as Oprah would show examples of women listening to those little voices and taking control of their lives and careers and coming out on the other side more fulfilled and ultimately, LIVING THEIR BEST LIVES. I am not where I am today without Oprah Winfrey. That I know for sure.
