While Saijo has become a second home to me, the way the Pacific Ocean links Kochi to California, the land of my birth, gives Kochi a special place in my heart as well. Dancing for yosakoi takes me there in the heat of summer and now the Kochi Ryoma Marathon has laid claim to my winters. So it is nice to know that when I grow wistful for Kochi, I can find decent Katsuo Tataki ((鰹のタタキ: lightly broiled bonito sashimi) at HAZUKI dining and sake in Saijo! The master of the restaurant even let us watch him grill the katsuo over a beautiful blazing straw fire.

Saijo is also currently making strides to increase tourism to the Ishizuchi Mountain Range area, which includes Saijo and Kumakogen-cho in Ehime Prefecture, and Ino-cho and Okawamura in Kochi Prefecture – attracting more attention to the uncharted territory between these two kingdoms. It seems that HAZUKI has already embraced this union as it not only offers delicious Katsuo Tataki but also includes savory chicken dishes using locally acclaimed chicken meat from Okawamura. .
It’s an exciting time to be in Shikoku as the local people are keen to revitalize the region through new ventures that have a commitment to preserving the local traditions and natural beauty.
