This is so true. Particularly for those of us that are new to social justice work and for those of us with the most privilege. When I started out as an activist, I remember being upset and angry when people tried to hold me accountable for the effects of my words and action (as white men I would say we tend to do this the most). Despite my best intentions, I inevitably made mistakes, as we all do. Nowadays, I still sometimes feel my heart rate speed up when someone tells me about how my words or actions or lack of actions has caused harm, but I am more adept at getting curious rather than getting defensive. Working through the shame that used to be easily triggered in me was a part of that process as well. Perfection is a cover for shame, and the way to address it is not simply by “trying to be more perfect” (although as activists we should learn and grow from our mistakes) but also do the uncomfortable work of understanding what is deep underneath. Our activism and our allyship requires that we are able to take criticism and grow from it. Without accountability, there will never be justice or equity.
