Artist Claire Falkenstein began her career working with clay and created a unique body of abstract ceramic sculptures. In the late 1940s she started working with alternative materials such as sheet aluminum, wire, glass, and plastic but is best known for her fusion of tangled copper and melted glass. Falkenstein was commissioned to create the gates of the 18th century Palazzo Venier de Leoni which now houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (@guggenheim_venice). The artist’s gates, consisting of a twisted web of metal and colored glass, is a beautiful addition to the museum, greeting visitors entering the Palazzo since 1961.
