Photo by @simoncroberts | Summit of Mount Titlis, Engelberg, Switzerland (March 2016). Tourists explore the summit of Mount Titlis during a winter whiteout. Central Switzerland's tallest mountain, Titlis is known both for the world's first revolving cable car and having Europe's highest suspension bridge, at 500 meters above ground. In September 2018 researchers at the University of Geneva and the United Nations unveiled the results of an analysis of 22 years' worth of satellite imagery, which shows the evolution of snow cover in Switzerland. Although Switzerland's mountainous areas saw record snowfall in the winter of 2017-18, the country is losing its snow cover—and global warming is the probable cause (Source: Swiss Data Cube). Beyond the economic issues related to tourism, this study raises other questions, such as flood risk management and water supply.
