RIP Dick Dale - Father of the Surf Guitar. We all owe you. Rock on. 💥💥💥 Look how his guitar is strung ! He’s left handed, but plays essentially a right handed guitar - except for the controls and ‘horns’. So his heavy bass-end strings are at the lower edge of the fretboard. This means his fingers could never fall in the same shapes as the rest of us. Maybe this led him to use those low notes more often and more forcefully than everyone around him. But his highly distinctive sound comes from his very fast up-and down action in the picking hand (sometimes confusingly referred to as ‘tremolo’, in reference to the similar-sounding traditional Flamenco Spanish guitar technique, which is actually done in a very different way, with multiple fingernails). And a lot of echo effect. And thick strings. And a lot of energy !!! Check out his early hit ‘Miserlou’. Wild !!! I wish I’d met him. But truly we all benefit from his trailblazing. Bri

When I was listening to top 10 riffs, I came across Misirlou. I wondered how did he even play that? To this day, my friends say its a fancy amp trick but I believe that he really played the strings and without any tricks. After all, we should not take any shortcuts in music! (Or thats what I was taught 😜)

My father plays like this and fingerpicks like a god, some fucking how. I’ve never gotten my head around it. So tough, and so cool to see. Dick Dale was such a unique and masterful fellow, and I hope his tunes carry him as far in the next, as they have in this. ❤️ Much respect.

I adore Dick Dale, but why do people keep claiming he wrote "Misirlou"? Doesn't anyone who writes about music learn about music history anymore? He was heavily influenced by his Lebanese background, and we are all the better for that borrowing and reshaping of the style.

So sad. How did Dick Dale die and I'm just finding out now? The media doesn't even tell us anymore when the people we grew up loving leave this earth. Acknowledging, respecting, and appreciating their lives is how we keep them alive.

Brian, I hope you get to meet his son, Jimmy Dale, one day. I spent 12+ years on the road managing DD- his son a an amazing guitarist. Many thanks for your incredible words.

Eloquently stated. I love how Brian explains his opinions so you can almost see and hear them. Dale was a pioneer worthy of icon status.
