These two disturbing comments were posted on our Facebook page yesterday and are from a woman from West Michigan who owns 3 declawed cats. She claims that they are fine and not in pain because they can jump up to high places. 😿
.
She is angry that our facebook ad showed up in her news feed and she seems to not like it that we are trying to educate people in her area about the truth about declawing. .
We have two questions for you.
1) Is there any hope that people who condone declawing will wake up and accept the facts that it is a mutilating amputation procedure that always harms the health and well-being of a cat. .
2) Why do you think they deflect from the issue at hand and bring up other issues and play the victim when you ask them rational questions? .
Please join us and help us end this animal cruelty. www.citythekitty.org

The premise is incorrect...”declawing saves cats’ lives”. (1) only consistently respond with facts & research supporting declawing’s deleterious health effects and contradicting stated effect on adoption rates. FACTS & FIGURES cannot be argued against successfully (long-term). I’ve noticed that all these types of comments are emotion-based and your best weapon is FACT. (2) once they are positioned, they have to justify themselves. Humans don’t like to admit that they might be wrong. It takes someone with heightened self-awareness to see the other side. Average reaction is to defend & attack (and deflect from the subject at hand, when you meet their emotional “reasoning” with your factual evidence). Best you can hope for is that your facts will get them thinking, if they truly love their cats, and maybe change their behavior in the future. They are UNLIKELY to acknowledge now that you are correct & you may never know how many future opinions you’ll change. But those future changes will save future cats👍

1. I think really hardcore pro declawers will never change, just like hardcore racists cannot be reasoned with. They will eventually die (out) though, and leave room for a lot of open minded people who will question themselves about this barbaric procedure, as is already happening now. Look at what we have achieved in the last 20 years - there are now lots of States or cities in the US where declawing is banned. We didn't have that in the 1990s or 2000s.* * * 2. They deflect because deep down they *do* feel guilty but would never admit it, and can do nothing else but act with aggression and defiance. But then there may be others who are so deluded and actually do believe they did the right thing. I can only feel sorry for the latter, they really need to see a shrink (just like hardcore racists imho). Or otherwise they would be frickin euthanised....

I think the main problem is that some people have 100% trust in their vets and when their vets and many other vets do the procedure and see no problem in it, then it's going to be hard to convince them that it's cruel an wrong. No one wants to believe that the people they trust with the lives of their pets, would do something harmful to them.

Wow some people are the absolute worst. Especially on Facebook. Declawing isn't even a thing in my country. Apart from sickos I guess, nobody would even think of hecking mutilating a cat's paws. I wouldn't even know how to suggest this to a vet and not get slapped back to reality 😂

It’s absolutely pointless to try to convince people like her, so no, it’s not worth the effort. Educating people who really don’t know and therefore don’t have a firm opinion on the matter is definitely worth it. You can’t fix the world, but you can contribute to make it better.

Animal rights to bear young? She does realize the city will just euthanize them in shelters doesn't she? And comparing it to abortion? Wow the 🥜🌰are out in full force...
