Despite modern radios and GPS, our replica Vimy flight reenacting the first air passage from London to Cape Town would take 58 days, flying at just 65 mph. In 1920 the original aviators made this journey in 43 days, crashing twice. Seventy-nine years later, in 1999, we crashed once but were able to keep the airframe going. Today, a century after the Vimy first flew, it's remarkable to think that a modern jet completes the journey in 10 hours.
