Meet Cecilia Zumajo, a Ph.D. student and #femalescientist studying plant evolution and development of gymnosperms here at NYBG. 💚 #womenshistorymonth . “I grew up in Colombia, a neo-tropical country that exposed me to the enormous diversity of flowers and fruits, in terms of shapes, colors, textures, everything! When I came to New York, the landscape was very different. In Colombia, gymnosperms in particular were invasive. I only knew the pine forest which we cultivated for wood, which caused the soil to become very acidic. Nothing else grew there after the pines. But here, much of the green that you see during the winter comes from the gymnosperms! I think that’s what triggered my interest in them. I started looking at the reproductive structures. When you see the seeds, they don’t have fruits, and it’s fascinating to me that they developed a different strategy for dispersal! I like to walk in the Benenson Ornamental Conifers, viewing the different tree architecture, bark patterns, and leaf colors, each a unique aspect of my love for these plants.”」3月19日 2時30分 - nybg
