Fatu is the granddaughter of Sudan, and one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet. Sudan, the last living male northern white rhino, passed away a year ago today, March 19.

To watch the last of something die is something I hope never to experience again, but Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him. The team at @olpejeta continue to devotedly care for the last two remaining northern white rhinos. If there is any meaning in his death, it's that Sudan can be our final wakeup call. In a world of 7 billion, we need to recognize that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves.
