I was raised lovingly by my dad and twin sister — but also my Taiwanese heritage & mother affected how I was treated, how I viewed myself and is half of who I am. Growing up & still to this day, I often go back and forth trying to understand my multi-racial identity. Am I Italian ? Am I Asian ? What do I want to be ? Why do I sometimes feel accepted by no community? But, simply, we are exactly who we are — nothing more or less. And finding that out meant disregarding what people labeled me as or what they wanted me to be. The journey to finally look in the mirror and go “This is me, I am the sum of all my parts, and I am the only one who can own that, and truly knows what that means” has been one of the most freeing feelings of my life.
