Eight-year-old chess player Tanitoluwa Adewumi just won the New York State Scholastic Primary Championship in his age bracket. Tani, who fled Nigeria in 2017 and now lives in New York, learned how to play the game about a year ago. Tani and his family had been living in a homeless shelter, but since the third grader’s victory, the Adewumis have received a flood of support and were even gifted an apartment, according to chess program supervisor at Tani’s school.
