This week’s post comes from Ruby Wincele, a student at Northeastern University. “The swim club was the essence of my childhood. Each summer, I spent hours swimming in the lake’s dark green water, playing giant games of Capture the Flag on the sand, and searching for frogs on paddle boats. On winter afternoons, my friends and I skated along it’s frozen surface and played hockey until it was too dark to see each other or the puck. As I got older, things began to change. I remember being pelted with hail during the middle of one swim team practice, while in the next season, the extreme heat sapped the energy from our final workout laps. The frogs and vibrant orange and white koi fish started to disappear. Algae now blooms during weeklong summer heat waves, rendering the water unswimmable without chemical treatment. The past few winters, the ice has been too thin for skating. One day, I hope my own children can experience the pure joy of running up the hill to the lake. But will it still resemble the place I love so much 20 years from now? My lake is just one of countless ecosystems, all being irrevocably altered by our changing climate. An equitable carbon tax will hold large, polluting corporations accountable for their greenhouse gas emissions causing this crisis and will help protect the natural places we love. This is why we need to #PutAPriceOnIt.”」3月25日 6時13分 - nikkireed
