🧐 Dans cette œuvre de fin de carrière de Pieter Bruegel dit l’Ancien (1568), cinq mendiants, culs-de-jatte et autres estropiés, se traînent péniblement sur leurs béquilles, dans la cour d'un hôpital de briques rouges. Ils semblent sur le point de se séparer pour aller demander l'aumône dans différents lieux. Au dos du tableau une inscription flamande proclame : "Courage, estropiés, salut, que vos affaires s'améliorent".

✍️L'interprétation de ce tableau a suscité de nombreuses hypothèses, qui s'interrogent notamment sur la symbolique des queues de renards accrochées aux chasubles des miséreux. Cette scène serait peut-être une allusion à Koppermaandag, fête annuelle des mendiants qui avait lieu le lundi suivant l'Épiphanie, durant laquelle ils quêtaient et chantaient dans les rues.

🧐In this work of Bruegel the Elder, five beggars and cripples are dragging themselves along painfully on their crutches in the sunny courtyard of a hospital built of red brick. They seem to be about to head off in different directions to beg, as is the woman in the background who is shown holding a begging bowl. On the back of the painting is an inscription in Flemish, "Cripples, take heart, and may your affairs prosper."

✍️Many hypotheses have been put forward to interpret this painting, particularly addressing the question of what the foxtails, hanging from the garments worn by the beggars, are meant to symbolize. The scene may be an allusion to Koppermaandag, the beggars' feast day held annually on the Monday after Epiphany, when the beggars would sing as they begged for alms in the streets.
