The legend has it that in the 16th century a shepherd living in a nearby village found a statue of the Virgin in a tree hole that he then decided to take home to Almonte. Overwhelmed by the heat on the way, he decided to rest near a tree, but when he woke up the statue had disappeared. He then returned to the same place where he had discovered it and found the statuette in the same place. The local authorities then decided to erect a hermitage there for her adoration, this virgin then took the name of Virgen del Rocio. Since then , hundreds of brotherhoods from the surrounding provinces but also from other regions of Spain undertake this pilgrimage every year, which brings together several thousand pilgrims, making it the most important in Spain.
