“Kendra’s presence injected adrenaline into my body, and I danced at the mere thought of her. My allegiance to the blonde superheroine slipped as a new possibility presented itself.. Kendra defied the Black best friend, magical negro, and funny sidekick tropes that Black actors and actresses are often relegated to. She had an integral role that affected narrative development. She was intelligent, focused, and more knowledgeable than Buffy about demonic history and the Big Bads in their universe. In some ways, she also had more physical capabilities. Kendra was emotionally complex and challenged how Buffy viewed her own identity as a slayer.
Black girls like me needed to see themselves on screen fighting against the oppressive evil forces that tried to destroy the world and kill the people we loved. Kendra was a somewhat tangible avatar that allowed me to process the real issues going on in my life. She demonstrated that I could fight my own battles. I didn’t need to be saved. I was my own savior.. She became my hope for the betterment I wanted in my own life.” A lot of the time we’re just doing our work, living our life, not fully comprehending in the moment all of the possible ways in which we might be positively affecting someone else’s life. Knowing that I have in some way fills me with so much joy because so many have unknowingly done that for me. Thank you @thedwmckinney for writing such a thoughtful piece and sharing your story. What a special gift❤️. 💪🏾💪🏾 @hellogiggles

@biancajasminelawson I know!!!! I remember when I was little and watching Kendra on Buffy, seeing how she knew more than Buffy made me so happy to see a female black fighter with a strong intelligence and physical performance. I loved how a white man (Joss Whedon) put his own race/ethnic type female as a strong role model in the forefront of television, but never lacking in mind to bring on a strong young black woman as well in addition to the full series narrative. The whole show was inspiration for all women, showed us how to get along even if we didn't get along, that we didn't need the boys or men to control any problematic circumstances- between us women and our demons we face and the male clang around us. Buffy showed us we could and can do all even without our parents, very empowering show in all ways, even though Kendra was short lived, it was great for that time in TV especially on a white based show.

Listen.... @biancajasminelawson you already know... Kendra’s heART, essence, and what she stood for.... all of that was divinely matched to who YOU are. That impact, that torch of willpower on television has carried many of us 🔥 we love you.

I was a huge Buffy fan and I remember what they introduced Kendra. My friend and I stopped what we we’re doing to watch, because even though we were very young we still knew they were going to kill Kendra, within a few episodes.
