Particular photographs throughout my life have made major impressions on me and this one of the other worldly #penelopetree taken by Richard Avedon 1967 is one of them. I remember my mother showing me this image as a child and just staring at it endlessly like it was some kind of riddle with no answer. Who was this mysterious creature? Both male and female, simultaneously feral and refined, originating from some magical realm unknown to mere mortals. The simple power of this image, especially this make up climbed it’s way deep into my subconscious, unknowingly influencing my own work years later. The way #richardavedon captured the essence of his subjects humanity though faces shaped my eye as a young artist. As artists our eye is THE ONLY thing that truly belongs to us. Your own unique, point of view exists outside of all judgment and commerce and speaks the language of true connection. Without it you are only at best a technician or a plagiarist. Being an artist means informing your eye constantly, staying curious and relentlessly astonished by the beauty all around you- oh and not just on the gram either. Sorry to say it, but as great as it can be for some things, it will NEVER be a replacement for real interactions with real, living, breathing human beings and actual art. Nurture and protect your creativity like the precious newborn baby that it is, yep it’s THAT effing important! Okay getting off my make up artist soapbox now:) Just suddenly felt the deep need need to give that little nugget away... #loveandlipstick Rach

davidtibolla Amazing, as always @rachelgoodwinmakeup 💯 This is the HOW and WHY artists pursue their dreams in the first place. The lasting impressions from youth (mine being Serge Lutens for Shiseido in the 80’s, totally otherworldly and enchanting), the sentimentality and the eye, us being the beholder, which creates a deep connection to art, aesthetics and culture. I do think it is still very much alive but maybe sometimes gets lost in this age of immediacy and Instagram self promotion, but then we are “old school”. Remember when we started out, how hard we tried to be subversive and speak our creativity through our medium? We were. And we were lucky enough to do just that. That is still alive, it’s just overshadowed by the immediacy of the time. However, nothing can compete with knowledge and experience. A true artist knows the values of knowledge, history, culture, techniques and can still navigate through trends. Okay, I’m climbing off my soapbox 😂😂❤️😘😘😘
