Born and raised in Tokyo to Indonesian Muslim parents, Aufa struggled to dress with her hijab and found herself missing out on all the popular Japanese clothing trends. “Although it was my choice to wear the hijab, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel like it was instead, wearing me,” Aufa says. Everything changed when she encountered the work of Hana Tajima, a British and Japanese Muslim designer who inspired her look.
