Sad one out at County Line. A gray whale calf washed ashore Sunday, apparently after being struck by a boat and killed (propeller wounds on the carcass). Returned to sea by a tug boat after a few hours of trying...with another whale, perhaps the mom, breaching out on the horizon. California gray whales mate & give birth in lagoons on the coast of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and then migrate back up to the North Pacific for the Summer and Fall months with pairs of cow & calf traveling last and nearer the coastline to avoid predators.
