AN EBERHARD FOR VALOR
In the autumn of 1944, from the Netherland to the Gothic Line in the northern part of Apennine mountains, nearly two million US and British soldiers were fighting to free western Europe from the German Army.
The story of the Eberhard chronograph that ended up on the wrist of a valorous US commander – with the gratitude of an entire city - is part of the story of the battle waged in defense of the rear lines.
At the time, one of the key points of the logistic theatre was the port of Antwerp, through which passed most of the goods destined to the front opened in June with the invasion of Normandy. The Germans soon realized that neutralizing Antwerp could slow down and possibly stop the Allied war machine. Winning back the port town became one of the Wehrmacht’s strategical objectives and the moment of truth to test one of Hitler’s secret weapons: the V1 flying bombs. The V1 carried nearly two thousand pounds of explosive, went nearly four hundred miles an hour, and had a range of one hundred miles. From the autumn of 1944 to March 1945, over five thousand flying bombs were launched on Antwerp with disastrous consequences.
The Allies quickly established a command for the interceptions fo the V1s. General Clare H. Armstrong of the US Army managed to set up an antiaircraft battery that could hit many of the V1s while still airborne. Over two thousand flying bombs were shot down.
At the end of the war, Armstrong was given high honors, a boulevard bearing his name still welcomes visitors to Antwerp and a bronze bust of the General can be found in the City Hall.
