At times, that last title seemed the most inconsequential, considering his standing as a dedicated community activist. A South Central Los Angeles mainstay, his Marathon Clothing Company served as an operations hub to his outsized ambitions. Tragically, he was shot and killed on March 31 outside that very storefront, ending a career that was on its ascent after the release of 2018’s Grammy-nominated debut, ‘Victory Lap.’ He was just 33. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Though Nipsey’s 2008 mixtape, ‘Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 1,’ didn’t find him fully formed artistically, it illustrated all the star qualities needed to make a dent in the game. He inked an early major label deal but quickly pivoted to independent status. There, he found his footing. Instead of paint-by-the-number record making, he sought collaborators from a variety of locales and genres, and double downed on the California scene to develop a concentrated sound. ‘Victory Lap’ cemented this vision. Tracks like “Blue Laces 2” and “Grinding All My Life,” featuring his staccato delivery and bruising insight, powered the album to critical acclaim. However, hailing his debut without citing all he accomplished prior, would be short sighted. And no investment in his portfolio had more upside than the development he poured into himself. Nipsey could have had an elevator ride to the top, but he chose to take the stairs.
