(Pt 2 of 2) this the story of how the Ep #FromTheGroundUp came to be. We were in a bidding war w 6 labels (low ball offers) & out of nowhere came Wendy Goldstein (signed Us/GZA/Black Star/Pharoah Monch/Common/Slum Village/The Weeknd/Ariana Grande—-also had Kanye until the last min—-according to that 49 min story Ye tells on “Last Call”) anywho—-she swooped in the polygram nest & blamo got (stole?) the Roots (label sent faulty contract & in the 72 hour weekend we got a life changing offer from Geffen—not Polygram by a long shot) Problem was our biggest champion at Polygram was @gillespeterson who was MAD early in having our back & his #talkingloud imprint on our product. Seemed logical: before “neo soul” there was “acid jazz” & it seemed rather likely that was gonna be our lane. Why not be on his label (the Def Jam for the hip music snob) Polygram was heartbroken (that’s saying it nice), but Gilles took it to heart real real RILL bad. For some reason he managed to convince us as a parting gift/consolation prize THE LEAST he could do is put an ep preview of our Geffen lp on HIS label. He knew our audience & he had juice (now a days we woulda made a mixtape) So as a result 4 songs from #DoYouWantMore??!!!? & 3 exclusives (one track birthed the name of Gilles radio one show @worldwide.fm) wound up being the welcome mat we placed our feet on in a really strange 25 year journey. Wow TWENTY FIVE years. 🍾🥂 raising a toast to another 25 years of a mystery ride not knowing where life will take us! Cheers!
