You might know about my long love for textiles and patterns, so when working on this book I really wanted to bring in this obsession of mine into this story. The character Leila reminds me a lot of my daughter Sabrina, they are both about the same age, they both rock this two-braid hairstyle, and they both love playing with grandma’s scarfs. On top of everything, both my daughter and the character Leila live between two cultures - the American society and the traditional culture of where their family came from.
