Today’s #MetCameo pick comes from @AlanCummingSnaps: “Seeing this Calder is sort of therapeutic for me. I’m terrified of Calder because once in a film I had to hold a Calder mobile and pretend to give it to someone whilst being in a hot tub. I thought I was going to drop it into the murky bubbly depths and ruin this great piece of American art. Looking at this Calder helps me get over my fear of being near his work. Luckily it’s so high up, I can’t touch it!”
🎨: Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1976). Four Directions, 1956. Hanging mobile made of painted aluminum and iron wire. On view in #MetEpicAbstraction in Gallery 925. #MetModern #AlanCumming

I remember discovering Calder in my teens at MOMA and being ecstatic with his spatial play and then his circus figures. Always enjoy his mobiles. Double fan — you and Calder!

There was a fantastic Calder exhibition at the Montreal Museum of fine arts this past winter. I wanted nothing more than to touch one. Lucky you I say.

I was lucky enough to see his work when it came to London a couple of years ago. Such an amazing artist. I'd have been terrified to hold it too!!
