Kirstjen Nielsen abruptly left her post as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on Sunday after 16 months in the role. According to multiple administration officials, Nielsen had few allies left in the West Wing and was viewed among hardliners a not tough enough on the Mexico border policy. Nielsen did not resign willingly, a person close to her told CNN, but was under pressure to do so.
