Throughout #EarthMonth, we’re highlighting Guggenheim Collection artists who engage the natural world in their artistic practice.
#MegWebster was greatly influenced by the Land art movement in the 1970s. “Stick Spiral” (1986) is an ephemeral installation of tree branches and other foliage laid out in a colossal spiral. An ecologically minded artist, Webster stipulated three rules for the work’s creation: the trimmings must come from local vegetation, they must be recent enough to retain the fragrance and flora of the original plants, and they must be cut down for a reason other than the work’s exhibition. By using live plants that grow and decay, she represents the timelessness and abundance of nature.
