Happy #BatAppreciationDay! Not to be confused with a cotton ball, the Honduran white bat (Ectophylla alba) is one of the smaller species of bat, with a body length of about 1.5 inches. Scientists think that its white fur helps to camouflage this bat when it’s roosting under a leaf: when sunlight hits the foliage, it casts a green tinge on the bat’s white fur, allowing it to better blend in with its surroundings. This fruit-eating bat is also known for building its own leaf tents, cutting a leaf along the midrib so that the sides fold down to create cover. It usually seeks out leaves with a waxy surface for a waterproof shelter.
