To not back down. To not give up. To ask for what they need. To demand that they be treated with kindness and respect. The feeling of bearing witness to someone having an empowered birth experience is what keeps us doing this work. It’s what every birthing person and their family deserves. The reality of the birth climate in this country is that people are not surviving childbirth. Especially if you are black and/or brown. Black birthing people in the United States are four times more likely to die in childbirth than white birthing people. The maternal mortality rate for black birthing people is about 41 per 100,000 versus 11 per 100,000 in white birthing people. These are facts. Today is the last day of Black Maternal Health Week. This work needs to be ongoing. Donating money and amplifying the organizations doing the work every single day is one way to help.
