The massive plastic waste taking over the Caribbean and so many other places in the world is only 1 of the many problems our home faces. But looking for a picture to post honoring today I saw this and remembered the shock, deep sadness and frustration walking down to the beach of where we were staying, which belongs to a natural reserve. This is the kind of picture we must be sharing. You won’t see this in hotels because they clean it up for you, but the problem is still there, more present than ever. We can say we still have incredible sunsets, but the beauty of almost untouched places where nature reigns is quickly and irreversibly coming to an end due to plastic consumption and our habits around it. I believe we don’t have all the power to stop this and huge corporates could make decisive changes but they simply don’t choose to, but I also believe that is still in our hands at a personal level and everything you do matters. Even (and specially) the small things. They have the biggest impact as it’s something you repeat everyday as your routine. I don’t want to only look at the negative side of it: while I think we are still lacking a tremendous amount of empathy, love and compassion towards Earth, I also think that more and more people are opening up to this hard reality and seeing that us as consumers also have a fundamental role in all this, and we can contribute with our actions to make changes. I like to believe that some businesses are also being mindful of this big mess more than ever. And an important thought is that is not about being extreme or trying to reach perfection, let’s start with simply being MINDFUL about our choices and everyday habits. If we are not able to take care of our home, a place that has given us everything in the most beautiful and generous way, I don’t know what we are as a race.
