We were mixing #Dogma up at Skywalker Ranch in April of 1999. Jen was already pretty pregnant with @harleyquinnsmith but virtually a stranger, as we’d only met about a year prior. The Ranch is set on like a million acres in #marincounty, all of it naturally stunning, and you stay on the property when you mix. So when I got back to our room on April 23rd, Jen was gushing about the pastoral setting. “It’s so beautiful. We should get married here one day,” she’d said that night. And over the course of the next 24 fateful hours, we decided that “one day” would be 2 days later. We pulled together a wedding but didn’t clear it with the folks at Skywalker Ranch, in case they said no. Jen found a Dutch Catholic monk online who was willing to drive up to the Ranch. @samosier was my Best Man and Jen’s childhood friend Lisa was her makeshift Maid of Honor. Harley would pop out 2 months later so it seemed like a good idea to get hitched before her imminent arrival. I expected the milestone to be perfunctory: the last step you take in a grown-up relationship. I was a kid of 29: what did I know about the incredible journey I was embarking on? Apparently very little - because what I’d come to learn was marrying Jen wasn’t a last step of any kind. In marrying Jenny, I took the *first* step on a thus-far 2 decade odyssey into what would become the great adventure of my life: marriage. I remember standing across from Jen and at first thinking “I’m sure it’ll be like Dating +.” That was my asinine assumption of what marriage would be. But as Father Robert read scripture, I gazed into the eyes of the @usatoday journalist I’d only met the previous February and finally saw my future in her smile. Suddenly, it wasn’t just Dating + at all - it was Chapter One of the Story of our Lives.
