Back then, my agent told me she couldn’t get me a job on camera because she’d recently realized I wasn’t pretty enough to be a leading lady and not fat enough to be a character actress. Yep, she said it. Then she fired me. I had never written a film but decided to try. After making a list of all the things that made my family laugh about ourselves, I borrowed a friend’s computer and wrote the screenplay of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, hoping I could maybe play a cousin. But I didn’t have an agent so couldn’t get anyone at a studio to read my script. So I rented a small theater, jumped onstage and did the material as a stage show, playing all the roles, hoping agents would see the play and then read my screenplay. The audiences came but the agents didn’t. So I took all the money I had left and placed a postage sized ad in the @latimes. Well, the day the ad ran, @RitaWilson saw it and came to my play, afterward exclaiming with love that it should be a movie. Rita Wilson, @tomhanks and #GaryGoetzman produced the film and I even got to be in it. You know the rest of that sweet story. Years later, it is my honor to be in a play in Los Angeles, at @pasadenaplayhouse and to once again have an ad in the @latimes. Theater is my first love, my home, my haven of happiness. Playing the role of Sugar pushes me to places I have never gone onstage which leads to a wholeness, a creative catharsis which I had been craving.
