An x-ray of this sketch reveals it originally featured an angel in the sky – which Napoleon Bonaparte, who commissioned the work, asked David to paint over.⠀

The edits didn't stop there. By the time David finished the final version (now in the Château de Versailles's collection), Napoleon had also asked the artist to paint out Joséphine, his ex-wife!⠀
