Over 1.3 billion people live in India. 311 of them are female ice hockey players. In a remote Himalayan town, sometimes called Little Tibet, a women’s ice hockey team is building a sport in a country that is said to have only 5 indoor rinks. For 2 weeks, 30 players, most of them students, train on and off the ice at a camp more than 11,000 feet above sea level. With no locker room or Zamboni, the players get ready rink-side and use brooms and flat metal shovels to clear snow and ice shavings from the surface before and after practice. They dream of playing in the #Olympics, but for now, they set their hopes on the Challenge Cup of Asia, a tournament for countries in the lowest division of the @iihfhockey. “We are the first generation of ice hockey players,” said Noor Jahan, 28, the team’s goalie. “And we are definitely not going to be the last ones playing.” @hlswift shot these photos.
