Those long term shape-shifters who remember the old San Francisco—when drag bars thrived in Soma, the Castro, Polk Street, and even Hayes Valley—like Phatima Rude, Renita Valdez, Carla Gay and Mutha Chucka (above), are becoming rare creatures. The stories they tell are quite literally ghost stories within communities like the ones they move through, of people who have lost entire generations of elders to AIDS, and the bio-political nightmare the disease wrecked upon the city throughout its first decades.
Harry James Hanson (@skirtsuit) and Devin Antheus (@antheus_), with Deb Leal (@sneakyleal), took portraits of four respected elders of the San Francisco drag scene for Vogue; all of which can be seen in the link in our bio. The queens are some of the longest-running performers in the city, and the few remaining community members who can recall what the scene was like before gentrification and the rise of Silicon Valley changed the landscape.
