I reflect upon what it means to be Asian American: born in Singapore, raised and educated in Nepal and India, lived in England and Australia before moving to America. I’ve always considered myself to be a citizen of the world. Deeply rooted in my Asian culture are my beliefs and philosophies, but at the same time, I am delightfully unrooted physically. I’ve always felt that I absorb the world and its myriad cultures. It has informed my work and who I am as a person. It’s the reason that my lens is colorful and it reflects on my collections, my office, my home and dinner table, my groups of friends and in the things that I’m interested. Reverence, respect and humility are parts of my Nepali culture, and have positively impacted my life, it has grounded me. Then as an American, there is this intense celebration of passion and ambition which has given me the freedom, strength and courage to dream. It’s given me a unique cross-cultural perspective thus allowing me to see the world through an empathetic and celebratory lens. The truth about us Asians is that we are not all alike. So much so that we can’t and shouldn’t be lumped into one group. Our myriad ethnicities, backgrounds, cultures, experiences, goals and priorities make us distinctively unique. So, to my fellow Asians and AAPI: it’s time to embrace and celebrate each other, across all of our unique cultures. To be present, show up and show the world our many contributions, history and our continuous work. And to our friends and allies, let’s have conversations, dialogues and discussions for it often leads to empathetic solutions and appreciation. You can ask me anything about my culture, my travels and my experiences. I’m happy to explain it once, twice, many times because I’m proud of who I am, where I’m from and who I have become. And with those stories, my hope is that we are able to heal and realise that we are more alike than we are different. Happy #AAPI Heritage month and don’t forget this is the perfect excuse to eat as many dumplings as you want xPG」5月2日 14時44分 - prabalgurung
