Roger Shimomura presents himself as America's founding father in "Shimomura Crossing the Delaware," his piece based on the iconic 1851 painting by Emanuel Leutze.
In this 2010 work in our @smithsoniannpg, Shimomura replaces George Washington’s colonial troops with samurai warriors and remakes the body of water they cross to resemble San Francisco Harbor with Angel Island—the processing center for Asian immigrants—in the background. The piece echoes the compositional format of a Katsushika Hokusai wood-block print.
As a small child during World War II, Shimomura and his family were removed from their Seattle home to a Japanese American incarceration camp in Idaho. He has focused his art on the experiences of Asian Americans and the challenges of being “different” in America. #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth #APAHM
