The Ndassima gold mine, the largest in the country, was supposed to be exploited by a Canadian company before the Seleka rebels attacked the site. It is now controlled by the Muslim warlord Ali Darass, who makes most of his money from it and thus establishes his authority over the entire Bambari region. A few days before this photograph, a landslide caused twenty-seven deaths according to local sources. Central African Republic is in the throes of civil war since 2013. The country has been vulnerable ever since gaining independence from France in 1960. In 2014, the UN Development Program rated CAR as the second least developed country in the world.
