Today, I want to talk a bit about the negative effects/impact of social media but first a little background story, I started my Instagram in 2017, over the years, my account grew substantially.
People who have met me in real life and those who stumbled upon my account, the first thing they latch onto/noticed was the numbers. Although I’ll be lying if I said there weren’t days where I would choose a photo based on what I think will get the most amount of likes or cases where I felt “less worthy.”
It’s no surprise that social media helps to form unrealistic expectations of life as well as its association with body dysmorphia. Spending too much time has a negative effect on sleep quality as well as feeds our addiction and has been linked to symptoms of anxiety and depression.
My take home message for you guys (including myself) is, with so many things in life, it’s all about moderation or consider a “social media detox” if things become too extreme. At the end of the day, the number of likes you receive or followers you have SHOULD NOT define/validate your self-worth. There is no need to compare ourselves or place a value in reaching a level of “popularity” or “social acceptance.” It’s important that we remind ourselves this and that we are so much more than just a number.
