Kwame Brathwaite’s photographs capture black creativity and expression in its purest and most candid of forms. Between the late 1950s and the late 1970s, Brathwaite made his career documenting the burgeoning black art and political movements in New York — notably the "Black is Beautiful" campaign that encouraged black people to accept and celebrate their natural features. His photographs of black women in particular challenged the era's monolithic white beauty standards. Now, more than 40 of Brathwaite’s most memorable photoss are being showcased at the Skirball Cultural Center in LA.
