Maria Lidia Meza Castro sits in front of her house in the Washington, D.C., area on March 7. Back in November, Castro was photographed in a chaotic scene that unfolded along the U.S.-Mexico border: American border agents fired tear gas at migrants attempting to cross in Tijuana, and Castro held two young children tight amid the chaos. (Swipe to see the image by @kim_reuters_photojournalist.) “Honestly, in that moment, I just thought, ‘I’m going to die with my kids right here and now,'” Castro tells TIME. She was granted entry in December. For months, the 40-year-old and five of her children who made the journey from #Honduras have waited in the Washington area, close to where Castro has family, as her attorneys gather all the documentation necessary for her asylum plea. As millions of families celebrate #MothersDay on May 12, Castro says she would do it all again, and thinks constantly of the four children she left behind. Her focus, she says, is solely on obtaining asylum so she can begin working and providing for all nine of her children: "Now that I’m here, I at least have some hope to give my kids a good life."
