Speaking in Dance | “The whole thing is like demented serenity,” said the choreographer Gillian Walsh of her new work “Fame Notions,” which takes a close look at what it means to be an American dancer. For the piece, she said, she has created a setting “halfway between a park and a museum” to a score of “wildlife sounds, tacky meditation and angelic sounds of transcendence.” While the show, at @performancespacenewyork starting Friday, runs around 3 hours, audience members can come and go. (This excerpt is a concentrated version.) Gillian, or @ishellreal, wanted to break free from only working with dancers in her sphere. “The insularity of the contemporary-experimental downtown scene makes me feel trapped,” she said. As part of her research, she interviewed dancers from all backgrounds about their ability to survive in the field; that led her to hold an audition through which she found her cast. “We’re working with the stock image of the dancer,” she told the #nytimes writer @giadk. “Tricks. Essentials of technique. It’s really slow and there’s a lot of stillness because stillness is basically my one true love.” @sbrackbill made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly Wednesday series exploring the world of #dance.
