Sitting here in the Newark airport in a dumpling place. Just finished my pork buns and wonton soup. After that last bite I realized I never talked to one single person the whole time I was in the restaurant. I didn’t talk to anyone when I checked in for my flight. The sweet lady just smiled and directed me to the 30 kiosks to swipe my card and retrieve my boarding pass. I also took an UBER to the airport. Which I booked and paid for on my phone. Driving, Flying, Eating with almost zero human interaction. This is something I really need. I need a mystery nationality cab driver that is happy to get my cash tip(and not just the extra star) I need an aging frazzled hair Airline representative to check me in. Heck maybe she can even see if I can get on an earlier flight or change my seat. Now to the meal. Growing up with my dad we ate out almost every night of the week. This has made me appreciate the fine blue collar art of being a waitress. I’m not just talking about the juggling seven hot plates with silverware in your pocket part. I’m talking about the human interaction. A pro waitress can read strangers that come to her station. She can instantly bring crayons and kids menu to unruly toddlers. She can bring a hot cup of coffee to a weary traveler. Ice water to the flustered flight missers. She can check in mid meal to make sure everything is ok. Never forgetting to top off that coffee, soda, or water. None of which an iPad/tablet can do. In the grand scheme of things I totally get it. If airport payroll is 2 million dollars a year. And for that same 2 million dollars the can buy kiosks & tablets. These things will increase profits in a very short time by reducing overhead(employees) What is the real cost of all this?? Once the gadget cool factor wears off. We are just lonely. Like the elderly man I saw struggling to figure out how to use the tablet to order some dumplings today. Don’t we as a society have an obligation to give human contact for each other? At the end of the meal I pressed the button to pay my tab. I felt confused about what to leave for a “tip”. Hopefully the tablet gets an extra charge tonight for a job well done.. #jessejames
